stepping softly…

Dear ones,

On these Equinox days, I am pondering balance as we are presently forced into a change of pace and perspective. Swinging from one world to the other — from a world that is over-scheduled + over-saturated to one that is trying to take a giant pause in order to save its human family.

In my small world, the week has presented some balance between time in solitude and an abundance of connection with and support from friends, family and colleagues. I am wishing that you have the support you need, too.

In an effort to avoid being shrugged off by the Earth, I hope we can take soft, smart and safe steps toward a collective recovery. And as we hover in this unknown moment between dark and light, for now…  be still, be patient, be safe.

Big love.
Kelley

Slow down. Look closely. Listen.

Hello Friends in Maine, New York & elsewhere —

We just passed Imbolc (the midpoint between Winter Solstice & Spring Equinox) — which means we are in the home stretch of winter. Yes, I know — here in Maine, there is snow on the ground & Spring is shy, elusive & not usually in a rush around here.

But, if you look closely at the tips of the trees you’ll notice reddish buds pushing through. And, if you turn down the other noise, you’ll hear lots of boisterous bird festivities.

Slow down. Look closely. Listen.

Anyways, that’s all for now…
Below are some offerings that I’ve got brewing these days.

Big love, Kelley

Winter Solstice Practice

From the darkness . . .

A winter solstice practice

Gentle Flow + Restorative Yoga + Live Music
With Margo Rosingana + Kelley Voegelin + Matt Wasowski

Honor and emulate the ancient ritual of celebrating the darkest day of the year by exploring the richness of your inner body.  Winter gives us full permission to embrace the darkness because the solstice provides hope and faith that the warmth and light always return. Darkness presents the opportunity to explore deeply within our bodies, hearts and minds. In our winter hibernation, we can sit quietly, turning our awareness inward, learning and revealing what we might shed to make space for new beginnings in the light of the new year ahead.
This practice is open to all levels — it will include gentle asana and restorative yoga.

September offers sweet symmetry

September offers sweet symmetry to life around us — the Autumnal Equinox on the 21st brings a brief balance of . . . day / night, light / dark, activity / rest.

While riding this seasonal pendulum in it’s swing to the other side, we might hover in the balance that surrounds these next few days.

Here are some ways you might honor this . . .
> Try breathing in a 1:1 ratio — your inhale matches the length of your exhale. This is known as Sama-Vritti in yoga breathing techniques. (Sama = even, same. Vritti = fluctuation.) Do this for a few rounds of breath.

> Compliment the movement practices that invigorate you with those that are slower & more meditative. Meaning… Yes, go to your Vinyasa class or for a run but then go to a Yin or Restorative class the next day.

> Within the busyness of your days, take a pause to see the plentitude & abundance that already surrounds you.

Once the pendulum swings toward shorter days you might consider how to harvest all that abundance…

Look around — nature offers an inspirational design.

The squirrels are squirreling. The bees swarm around the last blooms of garden flowers collecting as much pollen as they can. We, too, do this — we harvest the fields, orchards & gardens. Guess it’s time to pluck those ripe tomatoes from the vine before the trees put on their spectacular performance of show & release.

To gather what’s needed & let go of the rest is a balancing act, too.

The warmer days will soon be behind us & frosty mornings lie ahead. In the meantime, below is my bouquet of offerings for this Fall.

Big love, Kelley

Solstice Musings

(blog post from the week of 12/21/2017)

Greetings!

As I sit down to write this, snow covers the ground, the thermometer reads 26 degrees & Portland Harbor is lit up like a Christmas tree with a boat parade! Sailboats, lobster boats, tugs & more are all strung with twinkling holiday lights. A very festive & colorful tug is sending fireworks off it’s stern, illuminating the night. It’s incredible!

We encounter the Winter Solstice today!

These shortest days of the year can make it hard to stay motivated or to want to leave the house. But, that’s okay. Nature is literally telling us to slow down, hibernate, observe, rest, replenish.Go with it. Winterize.

While the Earth takes it’s turn toward the Sun again, we’ll be stepping deeper into Winter. Meaning, we still get the chance to practice that delicate dance of going inward. We get to reflect more yin like qualities in our routines, while ever so slowly welcoming the return of the Sun. These brightly lit boats remind me of that. Light will eventually balance the darkness.

This opportunity to slow down is a gift. Consider our culture, society, schedules with all their draining demands… it’s all go, all the time. Guess what happens when you’re on “go mode” 24/7 & don’t stop to reflect, rest & reset? Like one of those fireworks… you burn out & crash head first into the ground.

Be content with decelerating.
Be grateful for it.
Be quiet, listen, reflect, meditate, add a little restorative or yin yoga to your routine. You might be intrigued at what you uncover when you actually allow yourself to turn inward. In doing so, this subtle act of receptivity supports your ability to envision fresh goals, intentions, wishes for the year ahead.

Embrace the season. It’s rooting for you.

Happy Winterizing!
